всё просто - глагол  take  переводится как "отнимать время у кого-то на что-" . употребляется без предлога. например,   it   takes me   two   minutes to get to school. - дорога до школы отнимает у меня 2 минуты. 

а в данном случае имеет место быть согласование времён, поэтому глагол  take приобретает   соответствующие формы или
